YumYou know, I was thoroughly expecting an oil wrestling match, but the curve-ball you threw was a bit more...uh, interesting.

This is typical of theist vs atheist. People should just learn to leave each other alone. That said, I'm theist, and no-one hassles you bout it if you don't hassle them. ross19 months ago#712reply
We'll leave you "theists" alone when you stop voting.Anonymous19 months ago#714reply
saying that identifying yourself by the denial of somebody's fantasy is stupid is like saying the terms "skeptic" "sane" and even "healthy" "sober" "normal" and "bald" are stupid. Any term that enough people identify with to show the presence of a trait needs a contrary term to show an absence of that trait.Atheist19 months ago#716reply

In reply to Atheist, comment #716:
Your logic is flawed. Traits and Beliefs are not the same thing. The statement also has some truth behind it, but you could easily state the reverse of the statement. Perhaps you should move to have Atheists called something more P.C.? (i.e. People who don't believe in Republicans aren't called Arepublicans...)Anonymous18 months ago#1064reply

err, yeah, they are, in a way. atheists completely deny the existence of a god. agnostics chose to neither agree nor deny the existence unless given proof one way or the other.Anonymous18 months ago#1078reply

Im an atheist and I deny existence but i require evidence for everything. that doesnt make me agnostic, agnostics are people who believe there might be some form of god or creater but decide all current religions have it wrong.Anonymous18 months ago#1088reply
And the theist in this comic is more like an evangelical. Many theists don't care what others believe, they just have a religious belief.Tao18 months ago#1129reply
"err, yeah, they are, in a way. atheists completely deny the existence of a god. agnostics chose to neither agree nor deny the existence unless given proof one way or the other."
Not true. I do not completely deny the existence of anything. I am not absolutely sure that god or santa or faries don't exist. In that sense i am agnostic, i do not claim to have any absolute answer.
However i think it is highly unlikely that god, santa and faries exist, therefore i live my life under the presumption that they do not exist. In that sense i am an atheist(I don't believe god exists).
If i would be presented with evidence supporting his existence i might reconsider.
So yeah, most rational atheists are also agnostics, and at least some theists(the ones that aren't 100% sure of their religion) are also agnostics.Anonymous17 months ago#1211reply

bald, cold, sober, dark, and atheist are all PRIVATIVES. this word means 'a word that describes a lack of something'. baldness is the lack of hair, cold is the lack of heat, soberness is [arguably] the lack of alcohol in the body, and so on. wrincewind17 months ago#1314reply

Cold is the lack of heat?I thought temperature words were a measure of the movement of particles... Cold means that the particles are moving more slowly, not that there's an absence of heat...Felonius17 months ago#1455reply

In reply to wrincewind, comment #1314:
That's BS, Atheists don't lack belief. They believe that God doesn't exist. Atheists claim to to positive that God doesn't exist. Agnosticism is a privative. Agnostics don't bother thinking about that kind of thing.. we are more comfortable just giving attention to things that we can see, feel and touch. There are less agnostics than people think there are. Many Atheists give us a bad rap by saying that they are agnostic as a backup defense when arguing against a theist.Anonymous16 months ago#1894reply

I like the way the author lumped all religions together to say "You stated goal is the conversion OR DESTRUCTION of all who think differently than you." I wasn't aware all religions seek to destroy others.Anonymous14 months ago#2180reply

I'm a Agnostic Atheist, IF there is a god, I would really like to eat him and take his superpowers.Anonymous13 months ago#2273reply
stated goal of religion...The only religion I am aware of that supports all other religions is Buddhism. Taoism (more a philosophy than a religion) is a pursuit of wisdom... and then there is the Jewish faith... They believe that only people born Jewish are going to receive the benefit of their faith and they are not actively recruiting...
That said, these are exceptions to the general rules the comic mocks - that does not make the comic any less relevant or entertaining. Kudos dude!agnostic analyst 12 months ago#2395reply
In reply to Anonymous, comment #2180:
Religious goalsThe author was speaking generally about believers. Some religions aim towards conversion, some towards destruction, and some towards both. That's where the "or" comes in. That's also why he used the word "theist", rather than something more specific (Christian, Jew, Muslim, etc). Henrietta11 months ago#2559reply
If a god ever shows up. We're screwed. It will basically be a second big bang... Yeah go ahead and call that god if you like. Doesn't matter, we'll all die from it. Hehe.613 The Evil11 months ago#2575reply

In reply to Felonius, comment #1455:
Well, even by your definitions, cold could still be viewed as a lack of heat. If we take 'heat' to mean the thermal energy of particles (that is, the energy of their random movement, as opposed to the orderly kinetic energy of macroscopic objects), then something is 'hot' relative to some reference object when it has more heat than that object, and something is 'cold' relative to a reference object when it has less heat than that object.
One thing to be noted, is that according to this definition, 'hot' and 'cold' are relative terms. Nothing is absolutely hot, because in theory, something could be still hotter, and the same holds for cold. A pot of boiling water is hot relative to my hand at room temperature, but cold relative to the sun. A cup of water with ice cubes in it is cold relative to my hand at room temperature, but hot relative to nitrogen in its liquid phase.
Of course, there is an absolute point where nothing can be any colder, namely absolute zero. This happens when there is zero thermal energy in the object's particles, and in fact, the average temperature over all space-time is close to absolute zero. So, in fact, everything we experience in day-to-day Earth life is hotter than average, by a fair margin. But 'hot' and 'cold' are terms of convenience, so generally when we say something is hot we mean hotter than room temperature, and something is cold when it is colder than room temperature. Or more generally, when we are working with a specific environment, and we expect most objects to have a given average temperature, objects that deviate will be hot or cold relative to this environment.
